In 1903, the main house was one of the original farmhouses along the St. Clair River. It was part of a small hamlet named Frog Point. The Canada Southern Railway passed through the fields and stopped down the road in Courtright where the well-to-do disembarked. Many visitors stayed at the grand Hotel Bedard or took the Courtright ferry to visit St. Clair, Michigan.
During the 1920's Prohibition in the U.S., our area became internationally renowned for its illicit "rum running" across the river. It is said there are many fine cars that didn't make it over the ice during those winters. Although the farmhouse has been modernized throughout the years, the original hidden cavity under the front entrance hall still houses contraband relics from that era.
Soon after World War II, a 6-room lodge was built on the property alongside the back field to accommodate farm hands. During that time, various companies established themselves nearby and the river road had more travellers, including labourers. The lodge became a temporary home for those who were essential to the development of local industries. In the 1980s, the property was acquired by our family who named the outbuilding the "Frog Point Motel".
Inspired by its long history as a lodge with "rooms to let", the newly renovated and rebranded Frog Point Inn is honoured to continue offering accommodations to working guests and to those who are looking for a rural respite on the scenic St. Clair River. Nestled between farmland and the river, our 6-room boutique motel is designed to make your visit a relaxing experience.
